The Gas Safe Register - what you need to know to keep gas safe

The Gas Safe Register is the only official gas registration body of gas businesses and engineers in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. By law all gas businesses must be on the Gas Safe Register.

A gas engineer can only be aligned to a registered business and be issued with a license to undertake gas work on behalf of a registered business if they hold a valid and current qualification. This evidence of competence relates only to matters of gas safety and is obtained by every engineer through a recognised route of training and assessment (much as the DVLA issues driving licences to those who have demonstrated their competence by passing a driving test).

Registration is only given on the basis of the business having at least one gas safety qualified engineer.

The Register is not a membership body or trade association.

The Register (and all services associated with it) is operated on behalf of the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each region in which it operates– i.e. Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.

Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the only gas registration body in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and in Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010.

Protect yourself from the dangers by following these simple steps:

• Trust the Triangle – only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances
• Get your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year
• All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card. Before any gas work is carried out always check the card and make sure the engineer is qualified for the work you need doing
• Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm
• Know the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.
• Check for warning signs such as lazy yellow flames or black marks and stains around the appliance. This could be an indication that your appliance is not working correctly and you should get it checked.
• If you suspect anyone is carrying out gas work illegally, report them to Gas Safe Register.

If you have had gas work done in your property in the last six months, you can nominate it for a free gas safety inspection. For more information and to find and check a Gas Safe registered engineer go to www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.

LANDLORDS

Landlords are legally responsible for the safety of their tenants. Landlords should make sure maintenance and annual safety checks on gas appliances are carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. By law landlords must make sure:

pipe-work, appliances and flues provided for tenants are maintained in a safe condition
that all appliances and flues that they provide for tenants use have an annual safety check
that maintenance and annual safety checks are carried out by an engineer registered with Gas Safe Register
all gas equipment (including any appliance left by a previous tenant) is safe or otherwise removed before re-letting
a gas safety record is provided to the tenant within 28 days of completing the check or to any new tenant before they move in
they keep a copy of the gas safety record for two years

TENANTS

Landlords have responsibilities for gas safety. All gas appliances provided by the landlord must be correctly maintained and a gas safety check must be carried out every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If you are a tenant always:

Ask for a copy of the landlord’s current gas safety record before you move in or after the being carried out.
Check the ID card of any gas engineer that comes to do work in your home. The engineer must be Gas Safe registered.
Check the engineer is qualified for the work you need doing, You can find this information on the back of the ID card.
Cooperate with your landlord and let a registered engineer in when a gas safety check or servicing has to be done.
Arrange for any gas appliances you own to be regularly serviced and safety checked every year.
Remember, if you think a gas appliance is faulty turn it off and let your landlord know immediately. Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. If you feel unwell seek medical help immediately.
